Superfood Fruit Smoothie Bowl

Superfood Fruit Smoothie Bowl

I’ve been seeing a lot of recipes and some beautiful pictures of  “smoothie bowls” so I decided to give it a try and see what we think of them in this house.  This Superfood Fruit Smoothie Bowl is packed with vitamins, flavor and nutritional value!

I’ve always made smoothies for the kids as more of a snack, so creating one that is more intended as a meal (breakfast or lunch?) seemed a no brainer.  This is maybe a more adult version.  Truly these are more meal sized in my opinion.  If you’re going for a snack, then reduce the ingredients at least by half.  The amount this made was large enough to fill a bowl and definitely helped me stay full for quite a long time.  I really liked the idea because you could put whatever you wanted in it.  I decided to focus on as many of the superfoods as I could.

The “why” of what I used in my recipe:

Kale:  I decided to use Kale in the recipe because of the vitamin A, C and K as well as fiber.  Spinach is also a great option.

Flaxseed and Chia Seed:  Use of flax and chia seeds for bone health, healthy cholesterol, protein, fiber and antioxidants.

Dairy:  I used whole milk and whole milk yogurt, although you could certainly opt for skim if you wanted to.  We have been increasing our “healthy” fats in this house to help support our brains and hearts.

Avocado: I used half of an avocado for it’s potassium, healthy fats, fiber and high vitamin values (K,C,B and E).

Fruit: The banana was perfect to help sweeten the smoothie and packed an extra potassium punch, while the berries, strawberries and blackberries, happened to be what was on hand at the time, but are also known for vitamins, antioxidants and fiber.

Sweetener: Pure maple syrup or some raw honey to sweeten it up a little more and just a pinch of cinnamon to help digest it all.

Superfood Fruit Smoothie Bowl ingredients

Just toss all the ingredients into a blender and blend away.  When that’s done, top with your favorite fruit pieces or even some granola.

I hope you give this one a try.  It really did keep me full for a very long time and there are so many delicious combinations to try.  Another thing I noticed, I didn’t even crave my mid-day snack 🙂
